Don’t worry, I get it all the time, my name is pronounced “Yay-an.”

I’m a mountain runner, guide, endurance coach and a bit of a geek, with a background in engineering and a lifetime of kayaking and adventuring. Before coaching and guiding, I spent ten years working as a mechanical design engineer, and much of my life either kayaking on rivers, multiday hiking or exploring interesting and remote places around the planet.

I believe the life experiences that I’ve been fortunate to have have stacked up to create a mindset that I rely on today. An engineering mind to take complex problems and simplify them, while sport has driven me to become a better version of myself.

I’ve failed more times than I know. Each failure taught me something new, and having a determination and focus that’s probably considered on the abnormal side, has kept me moving forward. Bit by bit, that perseverance led to some moments I’m proud of; the Dragon’s Back Race (4th overall), the Cape Wrath Ultra, the Mountain Goat Circuit FKT (winter), and a solo, unsupported Paddy Buckley Round.

The bottom line is, I’m someone who’s always trying to do things better. A little smarter, a little simpler, with the same determination in everything I do.
